Season Seeking - a Poem

"Season Seeking" *

Without leaving the house, she
knew it was winter;
floorboards and walls were
the barren wood--
frost encased the windows,
encased the air,
encased her bones.
Exiting breath revealed blanched vapors
fragments of her departing ghost.

She wanted to breathe in
Even if pieces of frozen sunlight sliced down her throat.

Wrapped
in cut and sutured crowded fibers
plastics and leathers
as though these could stave off
Cold,
once and again the front door opened
she stepped out

she
stepped
out

and sank to her knees in spring.
